Hopefully
this page will serve to explain the workings behind my current
art practice. In the most straightforward terms, my later
work in this academic year has been focused on exploring the
process of painting in relation to the processes of the mind,
both conscious and subconscious.
In the
first semester, I carried on from my interests in the last
term of first year. This involved drawing, and expanding the
scale of said drawings. These drawings were based on dreams,
and little ideas that sprang to mind as I worked, and it was
this combined with studying phiolosophies of the Romantic
period that provoked me to begin an exploration of processes
as opposed to drawing for the hell of it.
I decided
on the medium of paint for this experimentation as it seemed
the best way of both building up images and thoughts in layers
as they occurred to me, and masking over them as they became
less important. Later on in the year, I began to involve different
materials in the layering process to see what effect it would
have, and I feel that this was a positive step, as in my opinion,
my work has improved vastly from the start of the year.
The images
I use in my work are often images from dreams and sketchbooks,
creating some form of visual mindmap for the viewer to follow
in whichever way they see fit..
Largely,
my work is created for the pure joy of creating and enjoying
it; a bit like home brewing or baking chocolate brownies,
only longer lasting and possibly better for you in the long
run.
I
intend to continue my investigation into Romantic philosophies,
and of late have become particularly interested in differing
notions of the sublime. Hopefully, the year in Grenoble next
year will provide me with oppurtunity to develop my interests,
potentially into new media.
